Egypt made history by reaching the FIFA World Cup last 16 for the first time after defeating Australia 4-2 in a dramatic penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw after extra time.
The tense Round of 32 match was played in Texas on Friday and remained closely contested throughout 120 minutes. Both teams created chances, but neither could find a winner before the match was decided from the penalty spot.
Egypt captain Mohamed Salah converted his penalty with confidence before Hossam Abdelmaguid scored the winning kick to send the Pharaohs into the next round.
The victory means Egypt will now face defending champions Argentina after the South American side defeated Cape Verde in their Round of 32 match. The last-16 meeting will take place in Atlanta.
Australia coach Tony Popovic made a late tactical move by bringing on experienced goalkeeper Mathew Ryan just before the penalty shootout. However, the gamble did not produce the desired result.
Australia suffered an early setback when defender Harry Souttar sent the opening penalty over the crossbar. The next five penalties were all converted before young defender Lucas Herrington struck the crossbar. Abdelmaguid then calmly scored the decisive penalty to secure Egypt’s victory.
The match began brightly for Egypt. Emam Ashour opened the scoring after only 13 minutes with a well-placed header from a cross delivered by Karim Hafez.
The early goal forced Australia to attack more aggressively. The Socceroos had struggled in front of goal during the group stage and needed a response to stay in the tournament.
Australia eventually found an equalizer ten minutes into the second half. A dangerous free kick caused confusion inside the penalty area, and Egyptian defender Mohamed Hany accidentally headed the ball into his own net while under pressure.
The own goal brought Australia back into the contest and set up a tense finish.
Both teams searched for a winning goal during normal time, but solid defending and missed opportunities forced the match into extra time.
Egypt appeared the stronger side during the closing stages. Salah, who had returned after recovering from a hamstring injury, had a chance in extra time but fired his effort over the crossbar. Despite not producing his best performance, the Liverpool forward remained composed when it mattered most by converting his penalty during the shootout.
Australia also created opportunities throughout the match. Early in the first half, Cristian Volpato struck the crossbar, while goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir made important saves to keep Egypt level.
The match was played in front of more than 70,000 spectators, creating an electric atmosphere as both nations chased a place in the knockout stage. Neither Egypt nor Australia had previously won a men’s World Cup knockout match, making the contest historic for both teams.
Egypt had already made progress earlier in the tournament by recording its first-ever World Cup victory during the group stage against New Zealand. That success gave the team confidence heading into the knockout rounds.
Now the Pharaohs have reached another milestone with their first appearance in the last 16. The players celebrated emotionally after the final penalty, while Salah was seen in tears following the historic achievement.
Egypt now prepares for one of its biggest challenges yet against Argentina. With confidence growing after this landmark victory, the African champions will hope to continue their memorable World Cup journey against one of football’s strongest teams.
