Egyptian archaeologists have uncovered a rare and significant collection of funerary artefacts at the ancient Heliopolis necropolis in Cairo, shedding new light on burial traditions in one of the most important religious centres of the ancient world.

The discovery was announced by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities following excavations carried out by an Egyptian archaeological mission at the Panhesy cemetery site in Ain Shams, which forms part of the broader ancient city of Heliopolis.

Officials described the find as a near-complete funerary assemblage, including burial goods, ritual objects, and items believed to include gold jewellery. Experts say it is one of the most complete discoveries of its kind in the area.

The site is considered highly significant because Heliopolis was one of the oldest and most influential religious centres in ancient Egypt, historically known as On. It played a central role in the worship of the sun god Ra and was a major hub for religious and cultural development across multiple eras.

Among the most important objects uncovered were a copper mirror, alabaster kohl containers still containing traces of cosmetic material, and an obsidian cosmetic vessel. Archaeologists also recovered blue faience jars, symbolic scarabs, and yellow metal earrings believed to be made of gold.

In addition, researchers found faience amulets shaped like a duck and the Atef crown, along with semi-precious stones set in yellow metal frames. These items are thought to have been part of burial rituals intended to protect and guide the deceased in the afterlife.

The excavation also revealed mudbrick burial structures and limestone blocks inscribed with hieroglyphic writing. Officials said some of the inscriptions may provide valuable insight into burial practices and the identity of individuals buried at the site.

Previously discovered coffins were also found at the cemetery, including one containing gilded human remains believed to belong to a military figure. Archaeologists say such findings help deepen understanding of the social hierarchy and occupations of those buried in the necropolis.

According to authorities, the cemetery was used over multiple historical periods, including the Late Period of ancient Egypt, the Roman era, and even the Christian period. This long span of use highlights the site’s continued importance across shifting cultural and religious landscapes.

Experts say the discovery offers a rare opportunity to study how funerary customs evolved over time in one of Egypt’s most sacred cities. The combination of artefacts, inscriptions, and burial structures provides a detailed picture of changing beliefs about death and the afterlife.

The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities said the excavation will continue, as researchers carefully document and preserve the findings. Further analysis is expected to help reconstruct the historical development of Heliopolis and its role in ancient Egyptian society.

Archaeologists believe the discovery could contribute significantly to global understanding of ancient Egyptian civilisation, particularly in relation to religious practices and burial traditions that shaped the region’s cultural identity.

As work continues at the site, officials say more artefacts may still be uncovered, offering the potential for additional breakthroughs in one of Cairo’s most historically rich archaeological zones.
