Egypt is deepening its partnership with China in the renewable energy sector as it moves ahead with plans to expand clean power generation and modernize its national electricity grid.
Senior officials from Egypt’s electricity and renewable energy sector met with representatives from China Energy and the Electric Power Planning and Engineering Institute (EPPEI) to discuss new areas of cooperation. The talks focused on renewable energy integration, grid modernization, energy storage systems, and long-term planning for the power sector.
The meeting took place at the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy in Egypt’s New Administrative Capital. It included Electricity Minister Mahmoud Esmat, China Energy Chairperson Ni Zhen, and EPPEI President Hu Ming, along with other senior energy officials.
Discussions centered on strengthening technical cooperation to support Egypt’s transition toward cleaner energy sources. A key priority is improving the national grid’s ability to handle increasing volumes of electricity generated from renewable sources such as solar and wind power.
Egypt has set ambitious goals for its energy sector. Officials say the country aims to increase the share of renewable energy to around 45% of total electricity generation by 2028 as part of its national energy strategy.
To achieve this target, the government is seeking advanced technologies that can improve grid flexibility, expand storage capacity, and enhance transmission efficiency. These upgrades are seen as essential for balancing supply and demand as renewable energy expands.
The talks also covered cooperation in power system planning, electricity market development, and the integration of large-scale renewable energy projects into the national grid. Energy storage was highlighted as a critical area, especially as renewable output can fluctuate depending on weather conditions.
Another important focus was industrial cooperation, including efforts to localize renewable energy manufacturing in Egypt. Officials discussed technology transfer, supply chain development, and training programs to build domestic expertise in the energy sector.
EPPEI, a major Chinese research and planning institution, shared its experience in managing large-scale power system development. The institute has played a central role in China’s electricity reforms, including the development of long-distance transmission networks and clean energy expansion strategies.
Egyptian officials emphasized that cooperation with Chinese partners has already contributed significantly to the country’s solar and wind energy projects. They said this partnership is expected to grow further as Egypt accelerates its clean energy transition.
Minister Esmat noted that energy storage projects with a combined capacity of 14,320 megawatt-hours are planned by 2028. These projects are expected to support grid stability and improve the integration of renewable energy into the national system.
The Egyptian government is also working to ensure that the electricity system remains stable and reliable during the transition period. Officials said balancing rapid renewable expansion with infrastructure upgrades is a key priority.
The growing collaboration between Egypt and China reflects a broader trend of international cooperation in clean energy development. Many countries are seeking partnerships to access technology, investment, and expertise needed to meet climate and energy goals.
As Egypt continues to expand its renewable capacity, officials say partnerships with experienced energy players such as China Energy will play an increasingly important role in achieving long-term sustainability targets.
The discussions mark another step in strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries, particularly in sectors seen as critical for future economic growth and energy security.
