BP reported a sharp increase in earnings during the second quarter of 2026, driven by stronger energy prices, improved refining margins, and solid customer performance. The company also highlighted important progress in its Egyptian operations, including new natural gas discoveries and development projects.

The BP Egypt Gas Discoveries were among the key developments highlighted in the company’s latest financial update. BP reported an underlying replacement cost (RC) profit of $5.73 billion for the second quarter, representing a 144 percent increase compared with the same period last year.

Replacement cost profit is BP’s preferred measure of earnings. The metric calculates profit based on the cost of replacing oil and gas inventories rather than using current market values, which can fluctuate significantly with changing energy prices.

Company management said higher oil and gas prices played a major role in the strong financial performance. Improved refining margins and stronger customer-related business results also supported earnings growth during the quarter.

BP reported operating cash flow of $10.9 billion during the period. The company noted that this figure included a working capital build of approximately $1 billion.

The strong results come as BP continues implementing a strategy focused on portfolio simplification, debt reduction, and investment in higher-value assets. Under the leadership of Chief Executive Officer Meg O’Neill, the company has announced several restructuring initiatives aimed at strengthening long-term financial performance.

During the quarter, BP agreed to sell its retail business in Austria and completed the divestment of its Gelsenkirchen refinery in Germany. The company also launched the sale process for its UK North Sea business and announced plans to market Archaea Energy, its biogas subsidiary in the United States.

These efforts contributed to a significant reduction in debt. BP reported net debt of $22.25 billion at the end of the quarter, representing a decline of more than 11 percent compared with the previous quarter.

The company now expects total divestment proceeds for 2026 to reach between $8 billion and $9 billion.

In comments accompanying the earnings report, O’Neill acknowledged that the quarter occurred during a period of significant volatility in global energy markets. She stated that BP made meaningful progress in strengthening its balance sheet while simplifying operations.

Global production levels declined slightly during the quarter. BP reported average upstream production of 2.20 million barrels of oil equivalent per day during the second quarter, compared with 2.34 million barrels per day in the first quarter.

The company attributed the lower production to planned seasonal maintenance activities and market disruptions in parts of the Middle East. Gas and low-carbon energy production averaged 765,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, while oil production averaged 1.44 million barrels per day.

Beyond the financial results, BP placed strong emphasis on developments in Egypt. The company reported important exploration and development achievements across several projects during the first half of 2026.

Among the most significant BP Egypt Gas Discoveries was the confirmation of a natural gas find at the Nidoco N-2 exploration well in the East Nile Delta concession. The project is operated by Eni in partnership with BP and the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation.

BP also highlighted progress made in the Red Sea region. During the first quarter of 2026, the company signed a memorandum of understanding with the South Valley Egyptian Petroleum Holding Company for the award of Block 6 in the Red Sea.

Another major milestone involved the Denise W-1 gas and condensate discovery in the offshore Temsah Concession. BP described the discovery as one of its most important achievements announced during the first quarter of the year.

The company also confirmed a final investment decision for the El Burg Offshore area through Arcius, a joint venture between BP and XRG. The partnership plans to develop the Harmattan gas field as part of broader efforts to expand production capacity in Egypt.

The BP Egypt Gas Discoveries demonstrate the growing importance of Egypt within the company’s global energy portfolio. As BP continues investing in exploration and production projects, Egypt remains a strategic location for future growth and energy development.

With strong earnings, lower debt, and ongoing project activity, BP enters the second half of 2026 focused on strengthening operations while advancing key investments across international markets.
