Egypt has received new international recognition for its civil aviation progress after successfully hosting a major global industry conference in Cairo, underscoring the country’s growing role in international air transport.
The recognition follows the 38th IATA Ground Handling Conference (IGHC 2026), held in Cairo from May 19 to 21, which brought together aviation leaders from around the world to discuss developments in airport operations and ground handling services.
The event was organized by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and highlighted Egypt’s expanding capabilities as a regional hub for global aviation meetings and industry cooperation.
Officials said the conference reflected Egypt’s continued efforts to modernize its aviation sector in line with international standards and improve the quality of air transport services across the country.
During the event, IATA representatives praised Egypt’s progress and expressed confidence in the long-term growth of its aviation industry.
IATA Senior Vice President for Operations, Safety and Security Nick Careen said forecasts show steady growth in Egypt’s air travel demand, estimated at 3.4% annually through 2050. He added that under stronger growth conditions, the rate could reach 3.8% per year.
Careen noted that this expected expansion presents major opportunities for Egypt to increase trade, tourism, and foreign investment while strengthening its position in the global aviation market.
He also emphasized the importance of continued investment in infrastructure and services to support rising passenger and cargo demand in the coming decades.
IATA Director of Ground Operations Monika Mejstrikova also praised Egypt’s civil aviation sector, highlighting its resilience and ongoing improvements in ground handling operations.
She said Egypt has made significant progress in aligning its airport services with global best practices, particularly in safety, efficiency, and operational standards.
The IATA Ground Handling Conference is considered one of the most important global forums for aviation professionals, focusing on improving airport ground services and developing new industry standards.
Egypt’s selection as host for the 2026 edition marks the first time since 2009 that the country has hosted the event, a development widely seen as a strong endorsement of its aviation sector.
Industry observers say hosting the conference reflects growing international confidence in Egypt’s infrastructure and its ability to manage large-scale global events.
Officials also believe the recognition will support Egypt’s broader strategy to position itself as a leading aviation hub in the Middle East and Africa.
