Deadly Explosion in the Capital Russian authorities are investigating a deadly explosion that struck southern Moscow on Monday, killing Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, a senior officer in the Russian Armed Forces. Investigators said the blast tore through a vehicle parked near a residential building, critically injuring Sarvarov, who later died from his wounds. He headed the Operational Training Directorate of the General Staff, a key position within Russia’s military command structure.

Criminal Case Opened The Investigative Committee confirmed that it has opened a criminal case into Sarvarov’s death and is working to establish how and why the explosion occurred. Russian media reported that the blast took place in a parking area adjacent to an apartment complex, though officials have not yet disclosed details about the device or how it was detonated. The motive for the attack remains unclear.

Focus on Possible Ukrainian Involvement Investigators said they are considering several possible explanations, including the involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. “Investigators are pursuing numerous lines of enquiry regarding the murder. One of these is that the crime was orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence services,” said Investigative Committee spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko. She said authorities have ordered forensic and explosives examinations, questioned witnesses and eyewitnesses, and begun reviewing surveillance camera footage from the area.

No Response from Kyiv Ukraine has not commented on the allegations. Russian officials have not presented public evidence linking Kyiv to the attack, and the investigation is continuing.

Earlier Attacks on Military Figures Sarvarov’s killing follows a string of similar incidents in the Russian capital since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022. Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov was killed in December 2024 by a remotely detonated scooter, while Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik died in April after a car bomb attack. Ukraine has not officially claimed responsibility for either case.
