Cairo International Airport has completed a major upgrade to its baggage screening system at Terminal 2. The project has introduced modern computed tomography scanners designed to improve the way security teams examine passengers’ luggage. Cairo Airport Company confirmed on November 2 that all the new machines are now operating.
The upgraded system uses three-dimensional scanning technology. It allows security staff to view more detailed images of baggage contents and examine items from different angles. This can help improve the accuracy of checks while supporting the airport’s wider effort to meet international aviation standards.
The new equipment raises Terminal 2 from Standard 2 to Standard 3 under the relevant international screening framework. The change reflects the airport’s effort to strengthen security procedures and modernise its passenger services. The technology is part of a wider plan led by the Civil Aviation Ministry and the Egyptian Holding Company for Airports and Air Navigation.
Installing the scanners required careful planning because the airport could not stop normal baggage operations during the work. The older machines had to be replaced while the new equipment was installed and tested. Security checks continued throughout the process, and airport staff worked to prevent delays in baggage movement.
Cairo Airport Company said the project was completed without affecting flight schedules or the regular flow of passengers. The successful installation was important because Terminal 2 handles a large number of travellers and must maintain steady operations throughout the day.
The upgrade comes as Cairo International Airport continues to record strong passenger activity. Passenger traffic in August rose by 9 percent compared with the same month a year earlier, reaching more than 3.13 million people. Flight numbers also increased by 11 percent during the period.
Airport chairman Magdy Ishaq said the new scanners represent an important step in improving baggage inspection. He noted that the technology offers stronger tools for checking luggage and supporting efficient security work. The company also plans to continue updating its systems and introducing digital services for passengers.
The airport’s modernisation programme includes more than screening equipment. Officials are also working on digital transformation, smart passenger services and improvements to operational systems. These efforts are intended to make the airport more efficient while keeping security and safety at the centre of its work.
Cairo International Airport is Egypt’s main international gateway and an important air transport hub in the region. The completed Terminal 2 upgrade is expected to support smoother baggage checks and strengthen the airport’s ability to handle growing passenger demand.
