EgyptAir is preparing to fly to Sydney again after almost 25 years away. The plan would link Cairo and Sydney through Singapore. It is set to begin in early 2027. The airline will use its new Airbus A350 900 jets. The route still needs sign off from regulators.

The plan was unveiled with Changi Airport Group and Sydney Airport. It was first shared at an air show in Egypt this month. It has drawn wide interest across the travel trade. The airline has confirmed the details in recent days. Work on approvals is already under way.

The service will not be a single hop. The same aircraft will stop in Singapore before going on to Sydney. Passengers can stay on board through the stop. In airline terms that makes it a direct flight. It is not a non stop flight.

This would be the longest route in the EgyptAir network. Cairo and Sydney sit about 8,950 miles apart in a straight line. The path through Singapore adds roughly 94 miles. That is a small detour for a very long trip. It also allows the airline to sell seats on each leg.

The route is a revival rather than a fresh idea. EgyptAir flew Cairo to Singapore to Sydney until July 2002. That service ran twice a week. It used the four engine Airbus A340 300. The new plan brings the link back after a long gap.

There is a second gain for Singapore. A direct tie between Changi and Cairo has been missing since 2014. The new service would restore it. It would also add a fresh one stop path to Europe and Africa. Travel agents in the region have welcomed the news.

The key open question is the middle leg. EgyptAir wants fifth freedom rights between Singapore and Sydney. Those rights let an airline carry local traffic between two foreign cities. Without them, the airline can only sell trips that start or end in Cairo. With them, it can compete head on for Singapore to Sydney travel.

That corridor is already busy. Around 67 flights a week link the two cities. EgyptAir would become the sixth operator on the route. It would be the third to fly it on a fifth freedom basis. Fares there are keenly fought.

The airline is working with the civil aviation bodies in both countries. Approvals are expected in late 2026 or early 2027. A launch date, frequency and timetable have not been set. Ticket sales will follow once the paperwork is done. The airline has urged travellers to watch for updates.

Sydney Airport says the move matters for trade and tourism. Egypt is its largest unserved market in Africa. New South Wales is home to more than 21,000 people of Egyptian heritage. Many of them travel to visit family. EgyptAir will become the airport’s 54th airline, a record for the site.

Demand on the Cairo to Sydney path is thin on its own. Analysts have flagged that point since the plan appeared. The airline is expected to compete on price. Lower fares can move traffic away from rivals. That strategy has worked for other carriers on long routes.

The wider picture is one of growth. EgyptAir has been adding modern aircraft to its fleet. The A350 offers better fuel use and lower costs per seat. It also gives more comfort on long trips. The airline is using these jets to push into new markets.

Egypt has also been courting Asian visitors in other ways. The country has moved to grant visas on arrival to Vietnamese citizens. Tourism is a major source of foreign currency. Officials want more arrivals from South East Asia. Better flight links support that goal.

For Australian travellers, the plan offers a new door to the region. It would open one stop access to Cairo and onward cities. Egypt remains a popular destination for history and diving trips. A direct tie could cut both time and cost. That is the promise the airline is now selling.
