Millions of Egyptians are eagerly awaiting the official reopening of Giza Zoo, one of the world’s oldest zoological gardens, following nearly three years of comprehensive redevelopment aimed at transforming the historic site into a world class tourist and cultural destination. The zoo, established during the reign of Khedive Ismail in 1891, is expected to welcome visitors again during the fourth quarter of this year, following a phased reopening process that officials say will begin with a trial period before full public access resumes.

The scale of the transformation underway reflects a genuine effort to restore the zoo’s standing as a premier international attraction after it lost its international classification in the early 2000s. Egypt’s Ministry of Agriculture confirmed the modernization effort covers the entire one hundred twelve feddan site, carried out in close coordination with state institutions, international consultants, and global zoo welfare organizations working to ensure the facility meets contemporary animal care standards.

A centerpiece of the redevelopment involves a new pedestrian tunnel connecting Giza Zoo directly to the neighboring Orman Botanical Garden, creating what officials describe as the largest unified green space in Greater Cairo once both sites fully reopen to the public. This connection allows visitors to move seamlessly between the zoo’s animal habitats and the botanical garden’s collection of ancient trees and rare plant species, offering a combined nature experience unlike anything previously available in the Egyptian capital.

Animal welfare has featured prominently throughout the redevelopment process, with more than one hundred eighteen new species already introduced to the site and plans underway to import an additional three hundred sixty two animals as part of the broader modernization effort. Three Asian elephants will be housed in a newly constructed four and a half feddan enclosure, reflecting the scale of investment officials have committed toward creating habitats that better reflect animals’ natural environments rather than the more traditional cage based displays historically associated with older zoos.

The project has not been without difficult decisions along the way. Officials confirmed that some terminally ill animals, including lions suffering from conditions such as tuberculosis, were humanely euthanized under international protocols during the redevelopment process, a decision made to protect both the remaining animal population and staff working at the facility during the extended closure period.

Beyond animal care, the redevelopment has placed significant emphasis on preserving the zoo’s substantial historical and architectural legacy. Eight historically significant landmarks have undergone restoration, including the Eiffel Bridge, the Japanese Kiosk, the Royal Hall, and Tea Island, structures that have stood on the grounds for well over a century and carry deep sentimental value for generations of Egyptian families who have visited the zoo throughout their lives.

Financial investment in the project has been substantial, with current expenditure ranging between 1.07 and 1.8 billion Egyptian pounds, and total investment expected to reach approximately 4 billion pounds once the full redevelopment concludes. Operations at the reopened zoo will be managed by a private operator under close government oversight, with the Ministry of Agriculture and veterinary authorities retaining full regulatory control over animal welfare and safety standards at the privately operated facility.

As the anticipated reopening approaches, officials are actively pursuing accreditation from the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the Pan African Association of Zoos and Aquaria, credentials that would formally restore the zoo’s international standing after its earlier loss of classification. For a facility that has played a formative role in the childhoods of countless Egyptian families across multiple generations, this eventual reopening represents far more than a simple tourist attraction returning to service, offering a genuinely modernized experience while honoring more than a century of shared cultural history.
