Arab African International Bank has posted its strongest first half performance in five years, with net profit reaching two hundred two point eight million dollars for the opening six months of this year, a twenty seven percent increase compared with the same period last year. The results mark the latest milestone in what bank leadership describes as one of the most significant financial turnarounds in the institution’s recent history.

The bank, known widely as AAIB, said the strong results reflect continued support for its customer base alongside sustained growth across its core business lines. Corporate and retail loans climbed sixteen percent compared with December of last year, a pace of growth the bank credited with driving an eighteen percent increase in net interest income during the same period. Annualized return on average equity reached thirteen point five percent, up from eleven point five percent during the first half of last year, signaling improved profitability relative to the bank’s overall capital base.

AAIB’s recent performance builds on a broader multi year transformation completed under the leadership of Vice Chairperson and Managing Director Tamer Waheed. Speaking about the bank’s full year 2025 results reported earlier this year, Waheed described the turnaround as one of the most significant transformations completed by the institution in under three years, restoring its market presence and materially expanding its market share within Egypt’s competitive banking sector.

Over that broader turnaround period, AAIB’s total assets more than doubled to exceed twenty billion dollars, while full year net profit climbed above three hundred million dollars, compared with levels closer to one hundred million dollars in earlier years. That represented more than a sixfold increase in peer comparable local currency terms, according to figures the bank released alongside its 2025 annual results.

Asset quality has also improved substantially during the turnaround period. The bank’s non performing loan ratio dropped sharply to two point one percent, down from twelve percent back in 2021, reflecting a comprehensive realignment of the bank’s loan portfolio alongside sustained recovery efforts targeting previously troubled assets. Liquidity and capital positions have remained robust throughout the period, with a liquidity coverage ratio of three hundred twenty six percent and capital adequacy at nineteen point three percent, providing a substantial buffer against market volatility.

Founded in 1964 as Egypt’s first multinational bank, AAIB was established as a joint venture between the Central Bank of Egypt and the Kuwait Investment Authority. Over the decades, the institution has grown into a full service regional banking group, offering retail and corporate banking, investment banking, asset management, private equity, leasing, and mortgage financing across its operations.

Banking analysts say AAIB’s latest results reflect broader resilience across Egypt’s financial sector, even as banks navigate a gradually easing interest rate environment following a period of aggressive monetary tightening tied to earlier currency and inflation pressures. Declining interest rates have compressed fee income for some lenders, alongside increased competition in trade finance following broader normalization of Egypt’s foreign exchange market, yet AAIB’s income performance has remained strong despite those headwinds.

As Egyptian banks continue adjusting to a shifting interest rate landscape, AAIB’s latest results offer a positive signal for the broader sector heading into the second half of the year. With loan growth accelerating and asset quality metrics continuing to strengthen, the bank appears well positioned to sustain its recent momentum, even as the wider economic environment in Egypt continues navigating inflation, currency pressures, and broader fiscal challenges facing the country.
