Egypt’s microfinance sector continued to expand in early 2026, with the total financing portfolio reaching nearly LE 108 billion in the first quarter of the year. The growth highlights the increasing role of small businesses in the country’s economy and efforts to improve access to financial services.

The Egyptian Federation for Financing Medium, Small and Micro Enterprises reported that more than four million clients received support through microfinance programs during the period. The outstanding portfolio increased from about LE 105 billion in March 2025, marking annual growth of around 3%.

The rise shows continued demand for financing among micro-business owners who often depend on small loans to start, maintain, and expand their activities. These businesses include many small traders, service providers, and individual entrepreneurs across Egypt.

Non-governmental associations and institutions linked to the federation and licensed by the Financial Regulatory Authority provided LE 23.4 billion in financing to around 1.6 million clients in March 2026.

The figure compares with LE 22.1 billion provided to about 1.765 million clients during the same period in the previous year. The data shows that financing values increased, while the number of clients changed during the year.

Microfinance companies remained the largest providers in the market. Their outstanding portfolio reached LE 50.2 billion, supporting around 1.9 million clients. This was an increase from LE 43.7 billion in March 2025.

Banks also continued to provide direct financing to micro-enterprises. Their total financing reached LE 34.3 billion for about 587,000 clients in March 2026. This was lower than the LE 39 billion provided to 720,000 clients during the same period a year earlier.

The banking figures include direct financing only and do not include indirect financing provided through licensed microfinance organizations.

Organizations that support small and medium-sized enterprises also reported strong growth. Federation members licensed to provide financing for these businesses extended LE 25.3 billion to around 16,700 clients in March 2026.

This represents a major increase compared with the LE 18.7 billion provided during the same period in 2025. The growth reflects stronger demand from small and medium businesses seeking funding for expansion, operations, and investment.

Microfinance plays an important role in Egypt’s financial inclusion plans by helping people and businesses access formal financial services. Many small entrepreneurs who may not qualify for traditional bank loans use microfinance programs to support their economic activities.

Hala Abu Elsaad, chairperson of the Egyptian Federation for Financing Medium, Small and Micro Enterprises, said the sector continues to provide important support for micro-business owners.

She added that the federation is working with the Financial Regulatory Authority, the Central Bank of Egypt, and other partners to improve the efficiency of the market and increase access to financing services.

Financial inclusion has become a major focus for Egypt as the country works to expand economic opportunities and encourage entrepreneurship. Easier access to finance can help small businesses create jobs, increase production, and contribute to local economic growth.

The continued expansion of Egypt’s microfinance market reflects growing demand for flexible funding solutions. As more entrepreneurs seek financial support, authorities and financial institutions are expected to continue developing programs that improve access to credit.

With billions of Egyptian pounds flowing into small business financing, the sector remains a key part of Egypt’s economic strategy. Future growth will depend on stronger financial services, responsible lending practices, and wider opportunities for entrepreneurs across the country.
