This Sunday, 7 September, Europe will witness a blood-red full moon during a total lunar eclipse, the longest since 2022 at around 82 minutes. The Earth will pass directly between the sun and moon, casting its shadow and allowing only refracted red light to reach the lunar surface—hence the “blood moon” glow. Historically, blood moons carried weighty symbolism. Across Babylon, China, and Central America, they were often seen as omens of death, war, or divine punishment. In contrast, some African cultures, such as the Batammaliba of Togo and Benin, view the eclipse as a chance for renewal, resolving conflicts, and…
Max Verstappen set a new Formula 1 record to claim pole for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, posting a 1:18.792 lap at an average speed of over 164mph. He edged McLaren duo Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri in a thrilling qualifying session. The result marks a turnaround for Verstappen, who last year described his car as “undriveable” at Monza. Red Bull’s strong pace comes amid adjustments under new team principal Laurent Mekies following Christian Horner’s departure. Ferrari impressed on home soil as well, with Lewis Hamilton finishing fifth in his Monza debut for the Scuderia, narrowly behind Charles Leclerc,…
A new ultrasound “helmet” could provide a non-surgical alternative for treating neurological conditions, including Parkinson’s disease, depression, Tourette syndrome, Alzheimer’s, and chronic pain. The device can target brain regions 1,000 times smaller than conventional ultrasound, potentially replacing deep brain stimulation (DBS), which requires invasive electrode implants. A study in Nature Communications demonstrated the helmet’s ability to focus on regions 30 times smaller than previous deep-brain ultrasound systems. Researchers tested the system on seven volunteers, directing ultrasound waves to the lateral geniculate nucleus, a visual processing region, achieving highly precise results. Modulating the area produced lasting effects in the visual cortex,…
Labour could halt the badger cull, but only with a major investment in testing and vaccination, according to a new government-commissioned report. The review, led by Sir Charles Godfray, warns ministers have a “small chance” of eradicating bovine tuberculosis (bTB) in England by 2038 without additional resources. The disease costs taxpayers and the cattle industry around £150m annually, and more than 210,000 badgers have been killed since culling began in 2013. Godfray said evidence shows badgers can spread bTB to cattle, but non-lethal control methods, such as vaccination, could replace culling if properly scaled up. Measures like microchipping cattle to…
The Lancashire Wildlife Trust (LWT) has begun a project to reintroduce three rare species—large heath butterfly, bog bush cricket, and white-faced darter dragonfly—once common across Lancashire and Greater Manchester’s peat bogs. The insects’ lowland peatland habitats have been reduced by 96% due to human activity. LWT has been restoring these areas by rebuilding water systems and replanting specialist vegetation, and is now appealing for £20,000 to complete the work. “These insects play vital roles in the peatland ecosystem,” the trust said. The butterfly aids pollination, the cricket helps decompose plant matter and feeds birds, and the dragonfly keeps smaller invertebrate…
New Zealand is racing to protect its critically endangered birds, including the kākāpō, from H5 avian influenza before the spring migration brings the virus to its shores. With fewer than 250 kākāpō left, even a single outbreak could be catastrophic. A world-first trial by the Department of Conservation vaccinated 10 captive birds from five species with the H5N3 poultry vaccine. After two doses a month apart, four species developed strong antibodies lasting at least six months, offering hope for safeguarding breeding populations in captivity and on offshore islands. The next challenge is creating a strategic rollout ahead of migratory birds’…
