Luxembourg to Lead Initial Trial Program
European automaker Stellantis has signed a memorandum of understanding with Chinese autonomous driving pioneer Pony.ai to jointly produce Level 4 self-driving electric vans for use across Europe. The collaboration will begin with pilot operations in Luxembourg, setting the stage for broader deployment projected to start in 2026. The venture combines Stellantis’ expertise in commercial vehicle design with Pony.ai’s advanced automated driving technology.
Electric Van Fleet to Feature Advanced Self-Driving Systems
The companies plan to outfit Stellantis’ lineup of electric light commercial vehicles—including models under the Peugeot, Citroën, and Opel marques—with Pony.ai’s full autonomous driving stack. These vans will serve both passenger and goods transport markets, reflecting growing interest in zero-emission, automated mobility. During initial testing phases, safety drivers will remain inside the vehicles as the systems undergo evaluation and meet European regulatory approval.
Chinese Technology Firm Expands into European Mobility Market
For Pony.ai, the agreement marks a major step in extending its reach beyond China and the United States, where it already operates autonomous fleets. Stellantis sees the initiative as a key part of its strategy to bring next-generation automation into its electric vehicle portfolio. Both partners have stated that the rollout will prioritize regulatory compliance, safety certification, and data privacy protection before the service becomes publicly available.
