Rescue effort ends in tragedy on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast
Alexandria, Egypt – Seven young people drowned in the Mediterranean Sea west of Alexandria while trying to save a fellow student.
A group of about 150 students was gathered at the beach when one female student entered the water on Saturday, ignoring a red flag that warned of hazardous conditions. She quickly got into trouble amid the strong waves.
Several classmates rushed in to assist her but were also caught by the currents. Authorities reported that six victims, aged 15 to 21, died in the incident.
The following day, rescuers recovered a seventh victim, a man around 20 who had also attempted to help, according to local news site Al-Masri al-Jum. In addition, 24 others were treated after nearly drowning.
The tragedy underscores the risks of swimming in dangerous conditions along Egypt’s Mediterranean shoreline.
