Rare ancient Egyptian artifacts have arrived on American soil for the first time. The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco opened the “Treasures of the Pharaohs” exhibition at the de Young Museum. San Francisco serves as the inaugural US stop for the international touring exhibition.

The grand exhibition showcases 130 historic objects spanning nearly 3,000 years of Egyptian history. Curators arranged the items into six distinct thematic sections. The galleries guide guests through Egyptian government structure, royal courts, complex religious beliefs, and daily social life.

Exhibition visitors can view ancient items found by field archaeologists over centuries of digs. Displays showcase monumental granite statues, finely detailed gilded masks, and delicate gold jewelry. Highlights include rare gold artifacts recovered intact from royal tombs in 1939.

Curator Renee Dreyfus noted that the show brings recent archaeological discoveries directly to the Bay Area. She highlighted exquisite golden items recovered from the intact tomb of Pharaoh Psusennes I. The 21st Dynasty ruler was buried near 1000 BC wearing a pure gold mask made for protection in the afterlife.

Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Sherif Fathi, attended the museum’s launch event. Fathi explained that the collection reflects both royal rulers and ordinary working citizens. He praised the strong long-term working partnership between Egyptian authorities and San Francisco museum directors.

Fathi pointed out that 50 American research teams currently operate excavation and restoration projects inside Egypt. US and Egyptian groups also work side by side to recover stolen heritage items. Those joint efforts help return missing ancient artifacts to public institutions.

Exhibition directors praised the excellent condition and high level of detail on the ancient items. Artisans inlaid bright precious stones into face masks thousands of years ago. Detailed glass work remains visible on the artifacts today.

The “Treasures of the Pharaohs” exhibit opened on August 1 and will welcome guests through January 31, 2027. Museum officials expect high attendance numbers over its six-month run in Golden Gate Park. The collection will tour other American cities following its San Francisco stay.
