Major Expansion Plans
OpenAI, in partnership with Oracle and SoftBank, has revealed another round of projects under its sweeping Stargate program. The trio will establish new data centers in Shackelford County, Texas; Doña Ana County, New Mexico; Milam County, Texas; Lordstown, Ohio; and an additional site in the Midwest still to be finalized. With these developments, the consortium expects total planned capacity to approach 7 gigawatts, contributing to a long-term strategy that envisions as much as $500 billion invested in artificial intelligence infrastructure nationwide.
Partner Contributions
The companies detailed how responsibilities will be divided: Oracle will lead the development of three sites, while SoftBank will collaborate on two. Collectively, the Stargate initiative has now advanced toward nearly $400 billion in commitments. Company officials describe the effort as essential for scaling next-generation AI, combining Oracle’s expertise in data infrastructure with SoftBank’s network capabilities to support OpenAI’s rapidly growing computational requirements.
Economic and Energy Considerations
Backers estimate that the new sites will generate tens of thousands of jobs, from construction roles to permanent positions once the facilities are operational. Local governments are beginning to review planning documents, incentive proposals, and utility arrangements tied to the projects. Analysts caution that such large installations will place new strains on electricity grids and water supplies, especially in Texas and New Mexico. Supporters argue that beyond the challenges, Stargate will deliver major economic benefits and help solidify the United States’ position in global AI development.
