Sudan and Egypt have held high-level talks in Cairo to address consular challenges and strengthen diplomatic cooperation, focusing on improving services for Sudanese citizens living in Egypt.

Sudanese Foreign Minister Mohieddin Salem met with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty at the Egyptian Foreign Ministry headquarters on Saturday. The discussions centered on bilateral relations, embassy operations, and consular services provided to the large Sudanese community in Egypt.

According to official figures, Sudanese diplomatic missions in Egypt, including the embassy in Cairo and consulates in Aswan and Alexandria, serve more than one million Sudanese nationals. These missions play a key role in assisting citizens with documentation, legal issues, and repatriation processes.

A major topic of discussion was the operational capacity of Sudanese consulates. Officials reviewed challenges affecting day-to-day services, particularly for undocumented Sudanese residents and those affected by Egyptian enforcement actions.

Both sides emphasized the importance of improving coordination to ensure smoother consular procedures. The talks also highlighted the need to enhance efficiency in handling citizenship services and community support.

Minister Salem expressed appreciation for Egypt’s ongoing support for Sudanese diplomatic missions. He praised the level of cooperation between the two countries and acknowledged Egypt’s responsiveness to issues affecting Sudanese citizens.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty reaffirmed his country’s commitment to supporting Sudanese diplomatic efforts and ensuring that consular missions operate effectively. He said Egypt would continue to provide necessary assistance to improve services for Sudanese nationals.

Abdelatty instructed relevant authorities to address existing administrative and operational obstacles facing Sudanese missions in Egypt. The goal, officials said, is to ensure smoother functioning of embassy and consulate services.

A spokesperson for the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, Tamim Khallaf, said the meeting reflected the deep historical and cultural ties between the two countries. He described the relationship as one based on long-standing cooperation and mutual support.

Khallaf added that Egypt reaffirmed its support for Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. He also noted Egypt’s rejection of any parallel governing structures in Sudan.

The Egyptian side also emphasized the importance of achieving a humanitarian truce in Sudan as a step toward a broader ceasefire and political process. Officials stressed the need for continued humanitarian access to affected regions.

Egypt reiterated its backing for a Sudanese-led political solution and support for international mediation efforts. This includes engagement with the Quad Mechanism, which involves Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and the United States.

However, diplomatic efforts under the Quad Mechanism have struggled to produce a breakthrough in the ongoing conflict. A previously proposed roadmap, introduced months ago, called for a phased process beginning with a humanitarian truce followed by a ceasefire and political dialogue.

Despite limited progress, both Egypt and Sudan continue to emphasize cooperation and diplomatic engagement as essential tools for addressing consular challenges and broader regional stability.
