Google’s AI Overviews feature cites YouTube more than any medical website when responding to health-related search queries, according to a German study that analysed more than 50,000 searches. Researchers found YouTube accounted for 4.43% of all citations, ahead of hospitals, government health portals, medical associations and academic institutions.
The study, conducted by SEO platform SE Ranking using German-language searches in Germany, raises concerns because YouTube is not a medical publisher and hosts content from both qualified professionals and untrained influencers. AI Overviews appeared in more than 82% of health searches examined.
While Google says its AI summaries prioritise high-quality and reputable sources and that many YouTube health videos come from medical professionals, researchers and independent experts warned the findings suggest popularity and visibility may outweigh medical authority. Critics argue this reliance poses structural risks, especially given previous cases where inaccurate AI-generated health information could have caused harm.
