Arrest and Police Operations
Prince Andrew was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of misconduct in public office, related to his previous role as the UK’s trade envoy. Police also conducted searches at properties in Berkshire and Norfolk. While officials did not immediately name him, they confirmed that a man in his sixties remains in custody as inquiries continue. Andrew turned 66 on the day of his arrest.
Unmarked police vehicles were spotted at Sandringham in Norfolk, where he has been living since leaving Windsor. Authorities stressed the importance of maintaining the objectivity and integrity of the investigation, acknowledging the high public interest in the case.
Allegations and Epstein Connection
Recent reports suggest Andrew may have shared sensitive documents with the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein while serving as a trade envoy. The Financial Times reported emails showing Andrew’s involvement in negotiating an $8 billion oil-for-cash swap between foreign entities, with discussions including Epstein while he was under house arrest for a 2008 conviction.
Royal commentator Craig Prescott of Royal Holloway, University of London described the events as an unprecedented fall from grace for a member of the royal family. Police analyst Danny Shaw noted that suspects are typically held for 12 to 24 hours, with a maximum of 96 hours possible under extended judicial approval. Andrew is being held in standard custody conditions, without special treatment.
Royal Response and Past Controversies
Thames Valley Police previously confirmed it was reviewing allegations against Andrew. King Charles III expressed concern over his brother’s conduct and stated that Buckingham Palace was ready to cooperate with the investigation.
In October, Charles removed Andrew’s royal titles and ordered him to vacate Royal Lodge on Windsor estate, following years of controversy over his ties to Epstein. Andrew stepped back from public duties in 2019 after a widely criticized BBC interview regarding his association with Epstein.
Andrew has not been charged in connection with Epstein and denies wrongdoing. In 2022, he reached a settlement with Virginia Giuffre, who accused him of sexual abuse at 17. While Andrew did not admit liability, he acknowledged her suffering as a trafficking victim. Giuffre later died by suicide at 41, with her memoir Nobody’s Girl published posthumously in October.
