Japan introduced a new travel incentive to guide visitors away from crowded cities such as Tokyo and Kyoto. The Japan National Tourism Organisation and All Nippon Airways now offer free domestic flights across ANA’s regional network for UK and European travellers. The programme runs from 24 November to 31 January 2026 and encourages exploration of less-visited areas. It forms part of the “Stopover & Add-on Free Fare” offer, which lets eligible economy passengers book two free domestic flights on an international ticket by 31 January. Travellers can take these domestic flights anytime after that date.
The scheme ensures that passengers heading to Tokyo, Hiroshima, Aomori or the Izu Peninsula pay the same airfare. ANA says the offer allows travellers to design multi-stop itineraries at no extra cost. Taxes and fees still apply, and availability may vary by date and flight. Passengers can book the deal through travel agents, ANA offices outside Japan or ANA’s website.
Effort to Ease Pressure on Popular Cities
Popular destinations such as Tokyo and Kyoto have faced growing overtourism in recent years. Japan recorded 36.9 million tourist arrivals in 2024. Surveys show that more than 90 per cent of visitors want to see regional areas, yet fewer than 10 per cent have actually visited them. Japan now aims to shift travellers toward less-visited regions and reduce pressure on overcrowded hotspots.
Boosting Regional Tourism and Local Economies
The scheme offers access to over 40 ANA hubs in Japan’s largest domestic network. This expanded access makes multi-stop travel easier and more affordable for visitors. Officials expect the programme to support regional economic development by directing travellers to under-touristed areas. ANA says the campaign will help address overtourism, promote more balanced travel patterns and connect visitors with more authentic experiences across Japan.
