Google Invests €5 Billion to Power Europe’s Digital Future
Google invests €5 billion in Belgium to expand its data centers and AI network. The company marks one of the largest technology commitments in Belgian history and reinforces Europe’s ambition for carbon-free digital growth.
The investment expands Google’s site in Saint-Ghislain, located in Wallonia, and generates 300 new jobs. The project strengthens Europe’s access to artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure.
“Google deepens its roots in Belgium today,” said Bikash Koley, Google’s vice president for Global Infrastructure. “We extend our investments and open new paths for AI-driven transformation.”
Prime Minister Bart De Wever praised the move as a milestone in Belgium’s digital and energy evolution. “This investment confirms trust in Belgium as a center for innovation and sustainable growth,” he stated. “By expanding advanced AI and cloud facilities, we create skilled jobs, secure carbon-free energy, and reinforce Belgium’s role in Europe’s digital leadership.”
The new facilities operate entirely on renewable energy and connect to Belgium’s green grid, aligning with national and EU 2030 climate objectives.
Wallonia Emerges as a Digital Growth Engine
Google’s investment strengthens Wallonia’s growing reputation as a European digital powerhouse. The company first launched its Belgian data center campus there in 2009.
“The €5 billion expansion confirms Wallonia’s central position in Europe’s data ecosystem,” said Pierre-Yves Jeholet, vice-president of the Walloon Government. “It creates high-value digital jobs, fuels innovation, enhances infrastructure, and advances AI education. This project reinforces our digital sovereignty and supports our regional strategy.”
Local leaders welcomed the momentum. “This initiative energizes our innovation ecosystem and opens opportunities for other companies,” said Florence Monier, mayor of Saint-Ghislain. “We proudly collaborate with the inter-city development agency IDEA to integrate this project successfully.”
Strengthening Sovereignty, Security, and Collaboration
Belgium continues to balance digital expansion with national security. Defence and Foreign Trade Minister Theo Francken emphasized the importance of maintaining control. “Belgium engages with global tech leaders like Google while protecting sovereignty and security,” he said. “Strong cyber capabilities require cooperation and clear safeguards.”
The project also deepens Google’s partnership with Belgian telecom operator Proximus, which builds sovereign cloud services with the U.S. firm.
“We welcome Google’s continued commitment to Belgium,” said Fabrice De Windt, CEO of Proximus. “This partnership reinforces our region’s role as a key driver of European innovation and digital transformation.”
Google’s expansion in Saint-Ghislain establishes Wallonia as a cornerstone of Europe’s connected, sustainable, and secure digital future.
