Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi won the 2025 Nobel Prize for discoveries on immune tolerance. Their work explains how the body prevents T-cells from attacking its own tissues. Sakaguchi found regulatory T-cells, or T-regs, which act as the immune system’s brakes. Brunkow and Ramsdell identified the FoxP3 gene, vital for T-reg development and self-tolerance. “These cells stop autoimmunity but also help cancers hide,” said Prof Adrian Liston. The findings led to new treatments for autoimmune diseases, transplants, and cancer therapy. “This prize was long overdue,” said Prof Adrian Hayday.

George Russell delivered a stunning performance to claim pole position for the Singapore Grand Prix, strengthening his case for a Mercedes contract extension with a lap that left rivals trailing. Russell outpaced Max Verstappen by nearly two-tenths of a second around the Marina Bay circuit, but the Red Bull champion was furious after his final attempt was hindered by Lando Norris. Verstappen backed off his lap, waving in frustration at the McLaren, and later accused Norris of holding him up. “That is what happens when there is a car in front of you and that is noted and will be…
Goshawks, once hunted to near extinction in the UK, could soon be soaring above British cities if a new rewilding project goes ahead. Conservationist Dr Paul O’Donoghue, director of Rewilding UK, plans to release 15 goshawks each into Chester and London, sourcing chicks from wild European nests and UK breeders. The move follows the success of urban populations in Berlin, Amsterdam and Prague, where the birds have adapted to busy city life, hunting pigeons and nesting in parks. “The goshawk is basically a flying Batman bringing law and order to the city,” O’Donoghue said while observing breeding pairs in Berlin’s…
Ryanair has said it may be forced to cancel up to 600 flights a day during French air traffic control (ATC) strikes planned for next week, potentially affecting as many as 100,000 passengers daily. The strike, called by France’s largest ATC union, SNCTA, will run from 7 to 10 October and is expected to cut capacity across western European airspace. Flights between the UK, France and popular destinations such as Spain, Italy and Greece are likely to be hit, as many of those routes pass over France. Chief executive Michael O’Leary renewed calls for the EU to protect overflights during…
Autism should not be seen as a single condition with one underlying cause, according to scientists who found that people diagnosed in early childhood often have a different genetic profile to those diagnosed later in life. The research, based on genetic data from more than 45,000 autistic people across Europe and the US, revealed that children diagnosed before the age of six typically showed early behavioural and social communication difficulties that remained stable over time. By contrast, those diagnosed after the age of 10 were more likely to experience worsening difficulties during adolescence and faced a higher likelihood of co-occurring…
Scientists in the US have created human eggs from skin cells in early-stage research that could revolutionise fertility treatments. The work, led by Prof Shoukhrat Mitalipov at Oregon Health and Science University, could one day provide genetically related eggs for women who have lost their fertility due to age, illness, or chemotherapy. The same approach could also be applied to same-sex male couples, with eggs derived from male skin cells. The technique builds on the cloning methods that produced Dolly the sheep in the 1990s, by transferring the nucleus of a skin cell into a donor egg stripped of its…
New Zealand’s fastest bird, the threatened kārearea falcon, has soared to victory in the country’s beloved Bird of the Year competition. Capable of reaching speeds of 200km/h while hunting, the kārearea beat 72 other contenders in a scandal-free year for the often chaotic annual poll. With only 5,000–8,000 birds remaining, the kārearea is New Zealand’s only endemic falcon and its last surviving raptor. It hunts birds, lizards and small mammals, sometimes larger than itself, but faces major threats from habitat loss, collisions with power lines, and ground predators such as cats, stoats and hedgehogs that raid their exposed nests. “The…
Colourful cans promising calm, focus and energy have become staples in supermarket aisles, as functional drinks surge in popularity. Packed with ingredients like ashwagandha, lion’s mane mushrooms, L-theanine and magnesium, these beverages tap into wellness culture and the growing shift away from alcohol, especially among younger generations. But how effective are they really? Experts say the evidence is mixed. “Ashwagandha and L-theanine have shown benefits in randomised trials, particularly for stress and attention,” says Nicolle Cucco, a registered dietitian. “Magnesium is well studied too, but supplementation only helps if you’re deficient. If your levels are normal, more isn’t likely to…
Jennifer Lawrence received the prestigious Premio Donostia 2025 Award at the San Sebastian International Film Festival, becoming the youngest performer ever to win it. At 35, the Oscar-winning actress reflected on her career and used her platform to issue a warning about cultural freedom in the United States. “Our freedom of speech is under attack in America, including in the world of film,” she told reporters before the ceremony, urging empathy and creative independence. Lawrence also encouraged young filmmakers to persevere with auditions, learning, and above all, watching films. Presenting her new project Kill Me Love, in which she stars…
