    Nationwide Strikes Shake Daily Life
On September 18, 2025, trade unions across France staged a series of strikes and demonstrations to protest government budget reductions, causing widespread disruptions. Public transport services ran on limited schedules, many schools closed their doors, and pharmacies reduced their hours as workers from multiple sectors joined the protests. Union leaders estimated participation in the hundreds of thousands nationwide.

Clashes Emerge in Paris Amid Peaceful Protests Elsewhere
Major cities including Lyon, Marseille, Nantes, and Montpellier saw large demonstrations, while Paris became the focal point of unrest. Although most rallies proceeded peacefully, confrontations erupted between police and some protesters, with incidents of vandalism reported, including attacks on banks. Authorities deployed significant numbers of officers to maintain order and contain tensions.

    Government Faces Growing Backlash
By the end of the day, police confirmed 141 arrests related to the protests, most of them in Paris. The demonstrations increase pressure on Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, whose budget plan introduces extensive cuts and reforms. Critics argue the proposed measures threaten France’s social protections and are urging the government to revise or abandon its austerity agenda.
